I believe many of us take our precious time with decision making because we don’t want to make the wrong decision. This could be a big decision: ‘should I start this business’, ‘should I buy this product’, ‘should I hang out with this person’? Or it could be small decisions like ‘what do we eat this weekend’, ‘which clothes should I wear’, and others like that.
Usually we take time because we’re trying to be perfect and we’re afraid of making the wrong decision. I have been in that place several times, and I’m still working on getting out of this mindset.
We need to remember that agility in decision making is an advantage in the marketplace, and in life, generally. Because, typically, while you’re still trying to make up your mind, you may lose opportunities and you may lose time.
However, the biggest negative consequence of stalling at decision making is that you could stop trusting your ability to make good decisions. The more you procrastinate on decision making, the more likely you’ll lose confidence in your own ability to make the right decisions.
It’s productive to make a decision as quickly as you can because it helps you make progress in the matter and you can begin to work towards it, or at the very least, it would stop taking up precious space in your mind and you can move on.
These can help you with making decisions if you tend to take your time:
- Get the information you need.
- Remember that even good decisions are not foolproof.
- Trust in your ability to bounce back in the event that you took the wrong decision. There is no decision that you cannot recover from.
