A lot of us want to start a new project, write a book, start a podcast, a blog or a business. However, we find ourselves waiting for the perfect time, the perfect way or trying to do it perfectly.
There is nothing wrong with doing something perfectly; that would be top notch. And that’s great. We justify perfectionism because it makes us believe we are just being meticulous, excellent and paying attention to details, all of which are good things.
But perfectionism can be a trap. It can cause delay and inaction. In fact, it is usually a cloak and excuse that covers up something else, possibly fear, laziness or procrastination.
I have shared that I began work on The Lifeaholic Podcast in 2016, over four years ago. I recorded and edited the podcast and stopped there. I don’t remember exactly, but I think I kept telling myself, I need to do it better, or I’ll do it when I have more time. That was just an excuse, one that I didn’t allow this time around. If nothing else, I’m even busier than I was four years ago.
To be honest, I know there are still many changes I would like to make to this podcast to improve the entire listening experience for my listeners, but I decided to get started anyway, instead of waiting for it to be perfect.
Perfectionism creates paralysis. If you’re waiting for something to be perfect, you’re taking more time worrying over details that keep you in the same place. No matter how much work you’re doing in your mind, if you don’t have something to show for it, it’s like you haven’t done anything at all.
Perfection is subjective. Getting something done gives you access to feedback. You are not the end user of your idea or product. You may think it’s perfect and your customer may think it’s not.
Are you hesitating to take action on a dream or project because you want it to be perfect? It is better to take imperfect action than to have perfect inaction. Doing good work takes you faster to excellent than making perfect plans and not getting anything done.
