I prayed so many times for so many years, “Lord, what is the purpose of my life?” And then, I would go through the lengthiest, most thorough process I knew in trying to find it out. Then, I would go on a guessing game. Then, I would look at what someone else was doing and wonder if I shouldn’t be doing it, too.
It was a long, laborious and useless cycle.
It didn’t have to be.
Discovering purpose for this season is not about the many layers you pile on top of the thoughts you have, seeking a revelation. It’s usually a function of the layers you peel off. If you are really and truly seeking God, then, the true desires of your heart can be an indication of what He wants you to do.
Unfortunately, understanding our true desires is easier said than done. We have become so influenced by our needs, the expectations of others, and a life of comparison. We have believed that some things are just impossible.
Perhaps, there’s something in your heart, but you are afraid that it doesn’t look very bright, especially financially. So, you look for something more promising. Or, you may have seen people doing glamorous things on social media and that has influenced you into finding a more ‘sophisticated’ assignment.
In essence, to truly understand your purpose, you may need to remove different kinds of fears and limiting beliefs. Many times, your purpose is what I like to describe as the last man standing, when every barrier has been removed. It’s like peeling an onion, layer after layer. The last naked layer standing is what you really want. At least, it’s a good starting place.
It’s not always easy to get to our true desires because of all the fears and beliefs that we have been conditioned to live with. One way to get started in the right direction is prayer – a simple heartfelt prayer to God asking Him for a heart that’s purified from all the wrong influences.
He’ll hear. I can guarantee that.
