You Can Do Hard Things

October 20, 2020 Tinukemi Olaoye

We can do hard things. We are not flaky, we are not weak, we have been built and prepared for tough situations and we have been programmed to get through them and to thrive, somehow.

So, what are hard things? By hard things, I’m talking about situations that are very tough, tasking and require so much from you, physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and in other ways. The toughness of these situations can also be compounded by the fact that they are not fleeting, they tend to last for a while.

Sometimes we come into tough situations because we chose them deliberately. For instance, having to work twice as hard because you want to advance your business or career, having to study for a graduate programme even when you’re working full time, training for a marathon or high impact exercises because you want to build your fitness or endurance. Or relocating to a new city of country and having to adjust and start life all over again.

And sometimes, we don’t choose the tough situations; they’re kind of forced on us or just a part of life. For instance, if you have to recuperate from a tough illness, or become a caregiver to an ailing or elderly family member, or if you’re a new mum who’s struggling through round-the-clock feedings and care while homeschooling other grown kids or working from home? Or when you have to deal with politicking in the office or a hostile working environment.

It’s human nature to look for the easy way out of everything, but at the end of the day, that won’t always serve us well. We can only grow and advance by stepping out of our comfort zones. That’s how growth happens, that’s where we find progress. Even if we don’t go looking for tough times, this is life, there will be some tough situations thrown into the mix. We might as well just accept it.

These steps can help you get through hard things.

  1. Reconnect with your ‘why’.
  2. Recognise that you have been doing hard things all your life.
  3. Create routines and environments that help you automate your day and support your progress.
  4. Ask for help.
  5. Pray and invite God into the situation.

A tough situation leaves you stronger than before. So, if you have gone through tough things in the past, you are stronger now than you were then. Your ability to thrive has been stretched. I hope you receive God’s help and grace to get through every tough situation that’s before. With His help, you can do hard things.
