The recent protests and terrible happenings around the country have made this past week very difficult for many people in so many ways. And I want to express my condolences to everyone who has lost someone or something, even if all you have lost is peace or hope. I want to encourage you to keep putting one step after the other, even if that’s all you can do. God is still for us in this nation. He will preserve us. I pray that you will receive and feel the peace of God in your heart and in your lives in Jesus Name.
The period calls for some personal reflection: We still have the opportunity to choose what a negative or traumatic incident will leave us with. Will it make us bitter or better? Will we hold on to the pain or emotion and let it birth something dark in us? Or will we see it as an opportunity to assess our lives and our priorities?
I have chosen to channel this situation as an opportunity for me to reassess what my anchor is.
For our purpose here, the quick dictionary meaning of the word ‘anchor’ is: a person or thing that can be relied on for support, stability or security, especially in a stormy period.
When sailors encounter a storm, or when they dock at a port, to prevent them from being tossed to and fro, they use an anchor to hook themselves to the bottom of the sea. This gives the ship a firm hold, no matter how bad the winds get.
So, like I asked myself, I’m asking you to help you reflect and make the necessary adjustments in your life: What is your anchor? Is it a person, a position, some material property?
Every person in our lives has their place. And our jobs, roles, achievements and things have their place, too. But in tough situations, we find that they are pitifully incapable of giving us the kind of deep emotional or mental support we need.
I have learned afresh to find deep comfort, solace and hope in God. Things may change, people may change, storms may come, but He never changes. And only He has to ability to reach deeply into every corner and crevice of my life and work out a complete and thorough healing.
Please, make Him your anchor. And if He already is, please, reaffirm your dependence on Him. He is already fully committed to you.
You know, bad times will come in life, times of pain, confusion and fear. I wish we could change that but we can’t. We can only change ourselves and how we process these times and thrive through them.
One of the best ways to find something good in a traumatic situation is to learn from it. The major thing I have learned from recent events is that only God is capable of holding me steady. Hold on to Him, draw near to Him. He can and He will heal and restore us in Jesus Name. Amen.
