Have you ever tried so hard change a habit or a mindset, but you find yourself tripping back in? It happens to everyone. I had a season where I was struggling with a lot of emotional issues. Despite my determination to rise above them, I didn’t record much progress. The most interesting part of this experience is that I didn’t even know how deep my issues were.
Then I got the ebook, Healing from Soul Wounds by Pastor Debola Deji-Kurunmi. At first, I thought to myself, ‘This book is for those who have major issues; my case is not that bad.” But then I took a good look at the content of the book and realised that I needed it. This book is full of confessions that are like ‘cocktails’ for different emotional issues. I started making the declarations and confessions in the book and in less than one week, I noticed positive changes in my emotions and mindset.
How did this happen?
In God’s system, we are not supposed to labour by ourselves or change ourselves with our own strength. The Word of God is our change agent. God hasn’t left us to our own devices; the Word of God that we read, hear, declare and think upon has the capacity to change us from the inside out.
To initiate or continue the process of lasting positive change, we are required to do our own part by planting a seed. And that seed is the Word of God (Mark 4:14). Our own duty is to be truthful in our desire to change, and to be faithful and diligent in spending time with God and learning about Him and His power working for us and in us.
The word of God isn’t just letters and stories. It is God-breathed and it is a powerful, living Spirit. It carries the very force and essence of God, and when we put the Word on our lips, it’s super-powerful. Any lasting change begins in the spirit, and the Word of God has the power to transform our spirit and our mental and emotional realms.
Don’t be frustrated if you have seen all kind of professionals, or if you have read different books and followed all kinds of programmes to no avail. Many times, we need more than good intentions and determination to initiate lasting change.
Mark 4:26-29 says: “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself, the soil produces corn- first the stalk, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”
Let us use this blessing we have, our powerful agent – the Word of God, let us plant it, water it and nurture it. As long as we’re faithful with it, we will start to see positive, almost effortless change.
